intrinSIM Releases Generative Design Workflow Assessment Report for Autodesk Fusion 360

intrinSIM, a premier source of go-to-market services and technology licensing for engineering applications, has released an intrinSIM Market Report covering the assessment of the Autodesk Fusion 360 Generative Design workflow. This market report provides an assessment of the Generative Design workflow based on the January 2020 version of Autodesk Fusion 360.

This assessment uses the capability assessment model related to the Key Capability Areas of Generative Design for General Applicability and their associated criteria outlined in the intrinSIM Market Report entitled “A Vision for Generative Design” which explores the potential paradigm shift enabled by Generative Design and what is required to enable that design paradigm shift. intrinSIM has developed a process with quantified assessment for each key capability area in the capability assessment model and criteria outlined in “A Vision for Generative Design.” This report looks at the assessment of the Autodesk Fusion 360 Generative Design (Fusion 360 GD) workflow with respect to the Key Capability Areas of Generative Design for General Applicability and its suitability of Generative Design workflows for five (5) sample applications.

“Generative Design has the potential to dramatically change the design process as we know it. However, deployment of Generative Design is slow beyond the use by innovators as it is unclear to most if they can use Generative Design for their application,” says Joe Walsh, CEO of intrinSIM LLC.“This report sets a precedence in the Generative Design space by establishing a quantitative and objective means to evaluate workflow capabilities and requirements. The methodology used enables determination of the potential suitability of a specific Generative Design workflow for a specific application without the need for complex software evaluations.”

intrinSIM reviewed the January 2020 Fusion 360 GD workflow capabilities in collaboration with Autodesk and did a preliminary review of ten other Generative Design workflows capabilities based on publicly available information. The detailed assessment of the Fusion 360 GD workflow was combined with the preliminary reviews of the ten other Generative Design workflows to develop an overall “industry” Generative Design mean and maximum rankings for all 11 Key Capability Areas of Generative Design for General Applicability.

1. Handling all appropriate objectives and constraints
2. Handling multiple operational (load) conditions
3. Handling multi-physics
4. Handling multiple manufacturing processes
5. Handling cost as an objective or constraint
6. Handling Generative Design in an assembly/system context
7. Enabling informed, comprehensive and efficient exploration of viable design alternatives
8. Enabling efficient & effective transformation to detailed design analysis
9. Enabling efficient selection guidance of generated design concepts
10. Enabling Generative Design within the designer’s process, context & terminology
11. Enabling broad accessibility to Generative Design

The assessment of the Autodesk Fusion 360 Generative Design workflow also illustrates how the Autodesk Fusion 360 Generative Design workflow compares the Autodesk Fusion 360 Generative Design workflow ranking to the “industry” rankings for each the 11 Key Capability Areas of Generative Design for General Applicability. This comparison to industry ranking enabled classification of the Autodesk Fusion 360 Generative Design workflow for each key capability area into one of four classifications.

CrossCAD/WARE

Datakit announces version 2020.1 of its CAD file converters

Writer libraries in FBX and glTF formats are now available, as well as conversion support for new versions of Solid Edge, ACIS, NX, SOLIDWORKS, and PARASOLID files.

FBX and glTF writers now available for developers

The previous version of the Datakit software had added the possibility of converting files to FBX and glTF with CrossManager. These formats have now also been added to CrossCad/Ware. Software developers can now offer to export FBX or glTF files from their software by integrating the Datakit API.

Support for new versions of CAD formats

Datakit version 2020.1 also enhances the existing interfaces by adding support for new versions of CAD formats. All Datakit software benefits from these improvements:

NX Reading
Siemens has released several new versions of NX over the past three months since Datakit's V2019.4 release. V2020.1 supports all these new versions up to NX 1892.

Solid Edge 2D Reading
In the previous version, Datakit had updated its Solid Edge 3D file reading to support version 2020. This improvement now also applies to native Solid Edge 2D files (.dft).

ACIS Reading
Version 2019 1.0 of ACIS format is now supported. Datakit tools can read and convert all versions of .sat, .asat, .sab files up until version 2019 1.0.

SOLIDWORKS Reading
Therefore, all SOLIDWORKS files from 2009 to 2020 can be converted. Datakit's SOLIDWORKS plug-ins are also compatible with this latest version.

Parasolid Writing
Datakit now offers the possibility to choose the version of Parasolid exported from V10 to V32.

Improvements for the whole software set

V2020.1 also benefits from the continuous improvement of dozens of CAD interfaces provided by Datakit. They are, in fact, in permanent maintenance to improve their quality and support new entities, while also optimizing execution time.

These improvements apply to all Datakit product lines: for end-users using the CrossManager converter or plug-ins, as well as for software publishers using Datakit technology.

Users who wish to test Datakit software can download a demo license from the official CrossManager and CrossCad/Plg websites.

Highlights of the MeshGems 2.10 of Autumn 2019 are as follows:

Surface Meshing & Cleaning:

– New features

  • Capability to output the effective sizemap used for the surface mesh generation and pass it throughout the whole meshing workflow: can be reused in another meshing step, and especially after a cleaning task when required, to preserve the same final mesh specification.
  • Possibility to split over-constrained surface edges when required by a solver constraint.
  • Option to relax the mesh quality and sizemap respect constraints in return for a faster meshing process.
  • Anisotropic 2D proximity.

– Enhancements

  • Improvement of the quadrilateral surface meshing capabilities

Volume Meshing:

– New features

  • Anisotropic 3D proximityAnisotropic 3D proximity available also in Volume Meshing

– Enhancements

  • Strong improvement of the quadratic multi-element meshing capabilities, including the quadratic boundary layer generation.
  • Sliver removal treatment significantly enhanced for further robustness
  • Improvement of the mesh regularity and quality

Preview:

NEW “RESILIENT” TETRAHEDRAL MESHING TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE AS A PREVIEW FOR BETA TESTING:

  • Objective: Always be able to deliver a (tetrahedral) volume mesh from any, even dirty and faulty, input surface (triangle) mesh!
  • Ultimate solution for extremely bad inputs:
    • very dirty and faulty CAD geometries will lead to very dirty and faulty surface meshes and thus lead to a failure of the volume meshing step and global workflow.
    • When no failure of the global workflow is the priority, the “resilient” technology is mandatory.
  • Several modes to control the way that issues are treated and the quality of the resulting mesh.

VCollab

ENHANCED AUTOMATION CAPABILITIES ENABLE ANALYSTS TO ACCELERATE THE CREATION AND SHARING OF 3D, HIGH-FIDELITY, BROWSER-VIEWABLE SIMULATION RESULTS

VCollab 19 also provides performance and usability improvements, further simplifying communication and collaboration on simulation results

Visual Collaboration Technologies, Inc., announces the release of VCollab 19, the latest version of its advanced solution for enabling the creation and sharing of high-fidelity, 3D, simulation insights. This new release provides enhanced automation capabilities, along with performance and usability improvements.

VCollab 19 features include:
  • An enhanced Python API, which intelligently automates the extraction and processing of simulation information and creation of high-fidelity Actionable Simulation Insights™
  • Improved performance of linear and Eigen animations
  • Hotspot Finder Module enhancements, for advanced comparisons of design iterations
  • Faster publishing, graphics performance, and large model handling, for browser-based HTML5 viewing
VCollab’s solution overcomes the challenges inherent in the way simulation results are shared today. Analysts waste countless hours creating simulation reports, using tools such as PowerPoint, which deliver only low fidelity, 2D information. This results in design and release engineers making decisions with less than complete simulation information. Ultimately, product quality suffers.
